About Smith Safety Gear:

Smith Safety Gear out of necessity. In 1977 Dale Smith crashed in a skateboard slalom competition so bad that his legs looked like sausage. In 1984 he started making recaps for other brands of knee pads, including innovating a hard piece that would be large enough to also cover the entire pad itself. Dale Smith eventually rented a sewing machine, learned the different proper stitches, how to cut concise patterns and he dissected every other brand of pads known to come up with the best results imaginable. He found the best foam, that responds to impact and reforms to its original shape quickly. He also was a leader in innovating neoprene as opposed to elastic, to make a pad that won't stretch out and get too loose. By 1989 Dale Smith had designed hand made pads for major pro riders.

Smith eventually designed and sold shoelace covers, fingerless thumb gloves and neoprene horseshoe sleeve that was worn under kneepads, adding extra padding around the knee cap. Smith Safety made a deal with Vision Skateboards in the mid '90's and now has a full line of knee, elbow and helmet gear distributed by Select Distribution. All the Smith pads are available in a variety of styles.
