POC Skull Light Freeride Ski Helmet

Review top rated, POC Skull Light Freeride Ski and Snowboard Helmet. The Skull Light was developed in line with the technology of POCs Skull Helmets (see Skull X) but are aimed specifically towards free ride skiers. The same semi-hard shell technology and penetration proof front vents are used, but Skull Light helmets are lighter and have detachable ear pads for those warm spring days.

The Skull Light free ski and snowboard helmet, a semi-hard shell, combines the protection of a puncture resistant hard shell motorcycle helmet and the light weight and comfort of a bicycle helmet. POC has incorporated between the thinner hard shell and the in-mold EPP cushion a military-grade Aramid Ballistic Penetration Barrier (APB). The thinner outer shield acts as a traditional hard shell helmet until the point of impact becomes too great, then the in-mold hard shell is purposely designed to break, which allows the more absorbing inner core of expanded polypropylene foam (EPP) to take over, dispersing the remaining force throughout the helmet. The result is a ski and snowboard helmet that is incredibly lightweight, durable, and protective.

The outer shell has been updated for increased durability and optimized for the new liner material. Bone Shell 2.0, made with a ABS/PC blend, and based on the concept of super thin injection molding, was originally developed in the 08/09 season for the Skull X and Skull Comp helmets. The Bone Shell 2.0 material deconstructs on heavy impact for increased shock absorption and the Multi Impact EPP material of the shell, which does not deform permanently on impact, allows the helmet to be more absorbent in situations of repetitive shock, such as hitting race gates or tree limbs. The comfortable LD foam lining is interchangeable for size adjustments, cleaning and optimum comfort during a full day on the slopes.

SEPP: Super Expanded Polypropylene
EPP: Expanded Polypropylene
EPS: Expanded Polystyrene
The difference between the materials is that SEPP and EPP, unlike EPS do not deform permanently on impact and is therefore suitable to absorb repetitive shocks. Meaning, essentially that an EPS liner will break, distributing the force from the impact throughout the helmet. The EPP and SEPP are similar in that they will also break when the maximum force of impact occurs, but SEPP and EPP have higher stress limits when it comes to breakage and flex.
