Proper Fit of a Mountain Bike Helmet

How to Measure Your Head

  • Wrap a soft tape measure around your forehead, just above your eyebrows and ears. Make sure the tape measure stays level from front to back.
  • If you don't have a soft tape measure, use a string and then measure it against a ruler.
  • If your measurement is in inches, use our sizing chart to convert it into centimeters, which will give you your mountain bike helmet size. If you aren't able to get your exact measurements, use your hat size to find the corresponding helmet size in centimeters.

Proper Fit of a Mountain Bike Helmet

Now that you have the correct size, it's important to make sure the mountain bike helmet fits properly and will protect you. The mountain bike helmet should fit snugly and touch your head the entire way around. It should stay in place even if you shake or move. Make sure it sits low on the head so the sides of your head are protected and covered.

When the mountain bike helmet is on and feels snug, you’ll need to adjust the straps for an even better fit. Here are three tricks to make sure that happens:

  • When you look up; the front rim of the mountain bike helmet should be just visible to your eyes.
  • The “Y” of the chin strap should meet just below your ear.
  • The chin strap should fit snugly against the chin. If you open your mouth wide, you should feel the mountain bike helmet pull down a bit.
Some mountain bike helmets also have in-form fit system, which makes finding a precise fit easy and comfortable. It uses a small dial at the base of the mountain bike helmet to adjust the mountain bike helmet 6cm for enhanced stability and fit. It also has the vertical tuning feature which can accommodate different BMX dirt goggles and head sizes for a custom fit, free of gaper gap.
