Wakeboard helmets go through a rigorous testing process to develop and be approved for certain safety standards and certifications. Not all wakeboard helmets go through this process and it doesn't necessarily mean that a particular wakeboard helmet will not protect as well as one that is certified. Wakeboard helmets use the CEN (European Committee for Standardization), which not required but is there to show evidence of the safety offered in a particular wakeboard helmet. These safety standards certification organizations' reputation are very well defined as the preeminant voice in protective gear quality.
Wakeboard Helmet Safety Standards and Certification Procedures
CEN Safety Standard Certifications This European Standard specifies requirements for helmets designed for wakeboarding, canoeing and white water sports for use in waters of classes 1 to 4. The levels of protection recognize that most fatalities in wakeboarding and white water sports result from drowning after concussion and not from brain damage. This standard is not intended to apply to wakeboard helmets for use in extreme white water situations such as those where the jumping of high waterfalls is undertaken, because the need for impact absorption for such a wakeboard helmet, and the area of the head to be protected, are greater than those for most wakeboard and white water sports. The standard applies to wakeboard helmets with and without holes in the shell.
NOTE: This standard does not provide performance requirements for visors,chin-guards or face-guards.
