The Bern Watts (Brock foam) Hard Hat Skate Helmet is the original visor Helmet. Nothing carries quite the style and function of the Watts. This helmet provides the perfect balance of airflow and protection which allows it to be used in summer and winter sports. No helmet currently available offers these unique hybrid characteristics that allow this helmet to perform so well in all sport applications.

Bern Watts HardHat Skateboard Helmet:

This is the HardHat version of the Watts helmet (see below for the difference between the HardHat and EPS versions). The thing that attracts most people to the Watts helmet is the unique style that Bern has given the helmet. The original designer of the visor lid it is easily recognizable on the slopes or the dirt.

The Multi-Use ability of the Watts helmet for Skateboard, Longboard, Roller Derby, Inline Skate, Ski or Snowboarding:

Most of the helmets from Bern Unlimited have been designed to work with multiple sports. The Watts is no different. The Helmet has been designed to be used with Skate and Snow. As the Winter changes to Summer, you can remove the ear/neck wrap and pull out the vent cover and you have a perfectly styled skate helmet ready to roll. Below is picture the winter kit that can be removed to make the helmet a perfect summer sport lid.

Important to understand about Bern Helmets: Hard Hat / EPS / Zip-Mold Interior Protective Materials
It is important to understand the different helmet options Bern offers before choosing to buy. Bern offers 3 different interiors to their helmets:
The outer shell will be the same, but the interior padding and protective qualities are different

Bern Hard Hat uses an ABS hard shell and an interior foam called Brock Foam. Brock Foam is a soft, very comfortable foam that is rated as a multiple impact foam. When an impact occurs on a Brock pad, each bead moves the adjacent two beads laterally which diffuses the impact. Friction between the beads turns much of the force into kinetic energy. Multiply this by the thousands of beads in each pad and you have the essence of why Brock absorbs impact better than standard foam pads. It is made up of a polypropylene bead that offers a firm protective layer and has excellent moisture and heat wicking properties.
Brock foam is not certified ASTM or CE for snow or Bike. The helmet is still a great helmet, but you do need to be aware of this fact.

The Bern EPS uses the same ABS hard shell but has a more traditional EPS Foam interior. The EPS version is certified for Bike, Snow and Skate. Because of the Bern Shell design, this helmet is still very comfortable. The EPS version like all other EPS Helmets is rated as a single impact helmet and should be replaced after any major impacts.

The Bern Zip-Mold is what other companies will often call an in-mold helmet. The Bern Zip-Mold is similar in build to an EPS helmet except the outer shell and inner shell are combined into one during the manufacturing process. This allows for a better strength to weight ratio and gives the helmet a lower profile without losing its protective qualities.
Bern Unlimited Hard Hat / EPS / Zip-Mold Helmet Interiors / Bottom Line:
All three versions of Bern helmet interiors will perform and look great. But if you want to make sure that your helmet has been certified to US and world impact standards then the EPS or Zip-Mold versions are the option you should choose. We were also surprised at the comfort level of the EPS. Typically an EPS helmet will not be as comfortable as other other interior version such as the Brock Foam Hard Hat. This is testament to Bern's helmet designs. It is also important to understand that the EPS is a single impact rated helmet and will need to be replaced after any major impact. The other downside to the EPS is that it is only available in S-XL. If you need a larger size you will need to move into the Hard Hat version.
